Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital financial technology has popularized Sharia-compliant Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services among university students, driven by accessibility and flexible payment schemes. This study investigates the implementation of Sharia BNPL practices among students at the State Islamic Institute of Datuk Laksemana Bengkalis, evaluating the resulting consumptive behavior through the lens of Islamic business ethics. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology, data were gathered from 40 purposively sampled informants via in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The analysis, conducted using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, reveals that transactional convenience, lifestyle trends, and social pressures primarily motivate BNPL usage. Crucially, the study finds that limited Islamic financial literacy fosters impulsive purchasing and excessive consumption (israf), shifting student focus from fundamental needs to fleeting wants. Furthermore, the application of core Islamic business ethics shiddiq (truthfulness), tabligh (transparency), 'adl (justice), and amanah (responsibility) remains suboptimal within these digital transactions. The study concludes that addressing this digital consumerism requires synergistic efforts to enhance Sharia financial literacy and internalize values such as qana'ah (contentment)  to promote rational, ethically aligned financial behavior.
